People new to Windows 7 should review how to quickly find and start windows programs.

1) Drivers

You'll want to make sure you're not missing any drivers. I suggest installing the latest graphics drivers (even if you have some already) if you intend to watch videos or play games.

  1. Identify
    • First, it's a good idea to know what computer model you have. Look on the bottom (or back) of the computer and write the part or model number down somewhere for your own records. Start Notepad and save the model number to your hard disk, this will save you having to flip the computer over again in the future. If you're not sure what model of computer you have you can find out what's inside of it using CPU-Z (download on the right).
    • Now, determine if you're missing any drivers. Start Device Manager and see if any items have yellow exclamation marks next to them. If they do you'll want to visit source websites.
    • People with store-bought computers will do well to visit their manufacturer website. Common sites include HP, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, and Apple users installing windows on bootcamp.
  2. Graphics Drivers
  3. Other common drivers
    • Intel - Most users with Intel-based computers will want to install the latest chipset drivers.
    • AMD - Most users with AMD-based computers will want to check for chipset drivers.
    • nVidia - Some chipsets will be nVidia-based. Use CPU-Z to see what your chipset is.
    • Sound - Windows 7 automatically detects most Realtek soundcards, but often the latest versions are better.
    • For printers, scanners, etc... just go visit the manufacturer website and go to the support section.

2) Update Windows

Make sure to include optional updates.

3) Software Essentials

4) Big Programs

Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Outlook) is the most common and expected. Alternatives include Open Office and Google Office Apps.

Many people in the production world use Adobe products. You can download free trials.
